Passive Site Survey

what is a passive site survey?
During a passive survey, an on-site technician passively listens to WLAN traffic to detect active access points, measure signal strength and noise level. However, the wireless adapter being used for a survey is not associated to any WLANs. For system design purposes, one or more temporary access points are deployed to identify and qualify access point locations. This used to be the most common method of a pre-deployment Wifi survey.

When to perform a passive site survey

A passive survey should be conducted post deployment, after the site is built, equipment is installed and the network is in active use. Passive site surveys are mainly required when performing a complete analysis of the building floor and comprehensive learning of AP deployment location and placement.

How is an Passive Site Survey performed?

A certified technician comes on-site and collects hundreds to thousands of wireless data points throughout your location. This information is then used to determine the number of APs to deploy and their ideal placement.

To ensure adequate signal coverage and performance, all types of businesses should conduct wireless surveys.

The goal of a
Passive Site Survey

The goal of a passive survey is to report on all signals and strength at each location, including the installed network signals from neighboring sites or other devices that generate noise at wireless frequencies. These surveys report information on APs and their characteristics such as signalstrength, signal-to-noise ratios, interference and may reveal marginal performance issues in the network before users notice it

The importance of a passive Wifi Site Survey

Passive Site surveys collect information on all the signals in the environment and report information on AP's and their characteristics. They will reveal performance changes before users notice and ensure that all factors that may impact network performances are accounted for.
